LAST EDITED ON 08-Jun-01 AT 00:47 AM (EST)[p]Ok, I took my bike to the strip yesterday and saw a ford truck drag racing that was getting 10.3 second 1/4 mile times. It was awesome. My question is, where do I start? I wanna buy a used truck that is pre-84 so I don't have to worry about emmisions. What is the best truck to buy for this and what kind of mods are gonna be needed to reach these kinds of times? Thanks for any help!!! Also, can you give me any links to sites with fast ford trucks so I can read and learn about this stuff.

Your best bet is to get a copy of "National Dragster" go to www.nhra.com and sign up for their magazine which comes out every week. In the mag you'll find adds for used drag cars or trucks.
To purchase a used properly set up drag truck capable of running 10.s or faster expect to pay $8,000-12,000 for a "roller" (no engine or tranny) and around $15,000-20,000 for a "turn-key".
If you build one yourself, better figure on spending at least $30,000. Don't forget to also purchase a trailer, and you'll need a tow rig.
Now if you'd be content running high 12's or 13.s you could do that for under $10,000 and have a truck that is still streetable.
Buy an early F100, drop in a 460 with steetable cam, headers, duals, C-6 with shift kit, 2500 stall converter, if you need more HP top it off with a small nitrous kit...should get you in the 13.'s
You probably need 3:73-4:11s and slicks to get into the 12.s
(to run 12.s you'll need to install a roll bar and competition lap/shoulder belts to pass inspection)

I see trucks on the dragstrip all the time. Most are fullsize trucks that are heavy are require big block engines with big HP to get them in the 10's on the 1/4 mile. I saw a '83 Ford Ranger two weeks ago at Mooresville dragway in NC (1/8th mile). He was running a 351w stroked to 393 cid, an 850 Holley with a big shot of nitrous. I think he was running times in the low 6's and around 115-125 mph. The little Rangers are alot lighter and require less HP to turn in the same times as a fullsize truck
