460 - What Do I Do

#1 I'm looking for the biggest cam I can put into my 1971 460. It's in a hot rod, so I want the rump rump sound/power. This is what I have: recently rebuilt with PAW master rebuild kit, stock cast pistons, rods, a set of stock heads, no mods, just 3-angle valve job. The carburetor is a 750 Holley double-pumper. The intake manifold is a 460 Edelbrock Performer. I'm running a Jacobs pro-street spark enhancer, and a Mallory unilite distributor (or should I run a dual-point distributor?). Have a C-6 trans with a B&M shift kit. Rear end is out of a '79 Lincoln Verseilles (I think 300 gears). I'm looking for low-end torque, something off idle through 5500 RPM range. Any suggestions???

#2 I'm also looking for a set of fender-well headers that would fit a '53-'56 F-100. I want them to come out of the heads, over the frame, with fender-well exit. This is a must with the suspension I'm running. What do you recommend?

#3 Where can I get a rear sump oil pan for a 460? It also has to be low-profile, at least the first 3/4 of it (like they run in newer Mustang bodies). Does this need to be custom-built, or can it be purchased from a distributor?

so I want the rump rump sound/power
I'm looking for low-end torque, something off idle through 5500 RPM range.

These two statements definitely describe two completely different motors.

Give Comp Cams a call and give them all the specs; tire size, gears, tranny, etc and they will make a recommendation for a grind. I've got a 429, not a lot of rump rump, but enough to know the engine is pumped a little. For the headers I would just start e mailing or calling around to see who makes them for your application. There are several places, Hooker, Ford Power in Washington, and Hedman as examples. I got my super comp headers from Hooker through Summit Racing. The good part of that is if they don't fit you send them back to summit. These arn't fender well, but needed to fit a T bird clip I am running.

You might consider doing a little more work on your heads. I had the smog bump removed and it made an appreciable difference in sound and response.

Thanks to all for the info. It will be put to good use!!!
I'm also working on tilt one piece front end so that should keep me buissy while the heads and block are in the shop. There is an article in Popular Hot Rodding about rebuilding an 460 right now, talk about luck.
