I was helping a friend do his front brakes on a 99.5 F-250 4x4.. Everything went fine except, there is a flat spring clip that holds the pads or something. Anyway, he broke one and just went ahead and put the pads etc. on without it.
I told him I'd get one but he was in a hurry.
Will this be a problem or cause anything bad ??
Thanks.......
Does anyone have a pic or something to show these parts ?
I'm going to do my brakes next week and was just wondering
what this clip does and if I have one on my brakes ??
I think you are talking about the anti rattle clips? They go on the top of the pad I think between the pad and caliper, correct. Maybe they are on the bottom to I dont remember right now.
yea they are just anti-rattle clips. They span across from one pad to the other. One on top and one on bottom.I would get some and put them in to stop the chatter but its not life threatening.
If you're talking about one of the four rail clips which is a rectangular piece about 1 1/2" x 1" that could cause the pad to wear uneven and not release fully. The lack of that 99 cent part could cost a lot more down the road, but nothing dangerous mechanically. It's a good idea when doing a brake job to replace all the hardware. You can buy the kit which includes the v-springs , the rail clips and pin boots for about $10 at any parts store. It will save the aggravation and expense of doing the job twice.
i just did my brakes and i didnt put those back on either i was told that it is no big deal by a ford mechanic but then again i dont always trust those guys
No huge deal. They help the pads slide smoothly since they're stainless steel, and also help quiet the annoying clicking rattle. If your V-springs are in good shape and separate them firmly, you'll probably be fine.
I've had a lot of issues with my front brakes. When I serviced them this last time, I put on all new caliper hardware. Only $10 for the clips springs and pin boots and $20 for the updated pins. For the last 25K mi. still working perfect.
It seems eveytime I've cut corners in the past, something bad happens. Usually to my wallet or at 1:00 AM in the snow or rain. lol
Just keep an eye on your pads to make sure they wear evenly so you can catch a problem quickly and avoid problems down the road.
Thanks, I didnt even think about the pads might wear uneven. My rattle clip dislodged itself and ended up under part of the pad. I thought I had just ruined something but then took it apart and luckily it was them stupid clips. Maybe I should get some new ones 10 isnt that bad.
