That is my thought process. He will do AWAY with your weak ebpv set up by tapping and plugging the holes in your pedestal and totally rebuild your set-up for pretty cheap. I see no point in taking it all apart and NOT rebuilding it. He said the turnaround is pretty quick. From what I understand he is one of very few that rebuilds these turbos, at least out here in the Southwest.

I am almost tempted to pay the 100.00 core cahrge and have him send me a complete unit, then mail him mine later. I was going to save myself the 100.00 charge up front, but I think it is worth it to reduce the down time on your truck.

Has he quoted you a price to rebuild yours? Wondering how that compares to trading for rebuilt unit like you mentioned.

He told me the same price applies to either. If he rebuilds yours it just takes a little time, unless he has one ready to go. He told me 700.00 minus the 100.00 core charge. You are alittle bit ahead of the game as you bought the wheel already from him, so it should be a little cheaper than that.

I bought my turbo from Ron via ebay also. It was $500 minus the exhaust housing. I bought his Banks turbo since I wanted the stock style wheel and then I was going to use my 1.0 exhuast housing so he just sold me the banks turbo minus the money for his housing. Very reasonable and knowledgeable. I will say these turbo's are extremely easy to rebuilt. Once you have the turbo off it took me 10 minutes to have it apart.

So, are you saying that if you're halfway handy with a wrench you can rebuild it yourself? I really want to but if there's half a chance an amateur will screw something up in there I won't. Too vital a part.

The biggest issue would be that if you have worn out parts other than bearing that come in the kit you may not catch it. The shaft and base plate where the thrust bearing run are the two wear areas that would be of comcern.

I just sent my check to Ron in Utah, he is building me a 1.00 housing with a Banks wheel, new pedestal with NO ebpv valve, all plugged without the butterfly in the way. 600.00 total. Should be here by early next week.

He also balances the wheel. I am almost considering keeping my old turbo and take it apart and rebuild it myself and keep it as a spare. It is worth more than a 100.00 core charge IMO.

Thats a very good deal! is that even better than his ebay prices? I must say that Ron was so good I told him about this site and if he ever wanted to advertise. I also told him I would advertise for him. He is the man. His prices were better than any of the turbo shop's my dads shop has ever dealt with. Ron blew them away buy at the very least $150.

Ron is the turbo man I am just the messenger!

I need to get ahold of him to see if he knows anything about a Holset H2E!!

I agree Tim, I was thinking the same thing. I told him that the word is being spread around the community that he is the man. You cannot beat his prices and he does damm good work from what I can see. I talked to him directly which saves you a bit of money rather than going through his ebay site.

BTW, from what I understand after making several calls locally, he is one of the few technicians that rebuilds these turbos anymore. I called several local diesel shops and they did not rebuild or sell reman turbos.

thats pretty crazy that people aren't rebuilding them anymore! they are so easy! the other problem is that when the thrust bearing goes it takes out the compressor wheel, base plate and compressor housing so you end up with maybe a good shaft, center section and exhaust housing. The rest is junk.

I am thinking it would be worth keeping mine as the turbo itself is fine and still works well, my problem is the whole leaky pedestal issue and the crappy ebpv. If you really look at it, I am getting a 1.00 housing with a solid wheel and my old turbo that I could easily rebuild all for 700.00.
