I drained and dropped my pan today to change the fikter and fluid and install my 6.0 cooler. The truck had 147,000 on it when I bought it and 149,500 now. There was no metal in the fluid or around the magnet but there was a ring of sluge around it not much but some.
Is this a good thing?
the PO said he changed every 30,000 but With this I am thinking the pan has never been off. The fluid was not burnt but needed changing. Hpefully I can depend on this tranny for quite some time. OPINIONS Please.

The black sludge is absolutely normal. It's just ferrous wear metals that have collected on the magnet instead of circulating with the ATF through all the internal bearings and bushings. The magnet did its job.
Just clean it off and put it back around the drain plug bung, and put it all back together.
