External Transmission Filter

I found a Ford/Motorcraft in-line filter kit for the unit. Part number XC3Z-7B155-AA Transmission Fluid In-Line Filter Kit (Complete). It looks similiar to a Magnefine filter, maybe smaller.
I'm thinking this may be an ounce of prevention that I will go with. I plan on changing it every 30K or so when I change the fluid.
Good idea? Is there any chance the in-line filter could clog prematurely and starve the transmission? I can't imagine there's a built in bypass in this small unit.
