Is it this obvious?

I'll be quick, 2001 sports trac, Throwing codes 171 and 174. I was looking for vacuum leaks since I have already cleaned the TB, IAC, MAF and everything else I can think of. I should say that what it is doing is running rough at idle and is getting worse and now stalls at time. (plus mpg seems to be down) So anyway I'm checking for leaks and can't find any when I think, why not unplug the MAF sensor. As soon as I did the RPM's jump about 500 (from 500 to 1000) and it started running smooth again. Is it this simple do I have a bad MAF sensor?

I'd also check fuel pressure/injectors - if those are good, then MAF good possibility - I think you can actually check it with a meter to see if it any good before you buy a new one... sounds like you are leaning towards a run rich situation, and the MAF as you know, tells the computer how much fuel is needed, etc based on the air quailty/temp, etc... I mention fuel first though, to pin point it to a run rich condition - but if you have a failing/dirty injector, the system is sending more fuel to maintain RPM - Could also be a Vac leak, but I don't think so... if rough idle was your only problem, maybe, unless a vac hose is off somewhere... but a truck that new more than likely will not have bad vac tubes yet... hope any of that helps? - which engine is it? - I'm sure there are guys on here that can give you the details on how exactly to test things like the MAF, etc... If at idle, you were to disconnect it, I wonder if it would run the same or worse?
