I just bought a utility trailer with a Ford stepside bed on it, I bought it for the bed so I could switch with my truck. The bed looks like it came off a newer truck due to little running boards, like the ones that my 63 had. The wheels are the kind that the hubcap/center cap slide into the rim appossed to poping over the little nubs . Washigton state DOL said that the trailer has a vin # on the bed?? So I would have to have it inspected when I put it on the truck and visa versa. Anyone have any input on this? Confused again. Thanks Kurt G.
Many utility trailers sold in the 1950's - 1970's used wheels and hubs from 1942/48 Ford & Mercury passenger cars. Where the companies that made all those trailers found enough wheels/hubs is anyone's guess. U-Haul trailers used the same wheels during this time. Both 15 and 16 inch wheels were used. I discovered this info when U-Haul called the dealer I was working at in the 1960's and needed new wheel bearings. The bearings were what were used from 1942/48, the wheels matched my 1947 Ford Station Wagon.

Just don't register the utility trailer into your name yet. Switch the beds. The DMV won't know that it the utility trailer bed has a VIN once it's on your truck. Then put the old bed onto the utility trailer frame and register it as a home built trailer through the DMV. You'll then get a new VIN for the trailer.
Hell, just tell them the trailer was junk and you got rid of it. If it was made out of a Ford frame, which is popular around here, and has a Ford rear axle and springs, you may be able to sell or use some of those parts too. (check for a spare tire carrier, too!)
