Got an 03 Excursion just last week. We live off road and have to drive on the beach for about 20 miles to town. Yesterday I was going off the beach...high tide/soft sand and right about the end of the trip the trans. temp guage came up slightly and i smelled something... looked in the mirror and had smoke coming out the back got out and shut her off and waited for the fluid to stop coming out. checked the fluid...had plenty so I drove her off the beach and it was fine the rest of the day. It was probably the hottest day of the summer (nearly 100 degrees) should I be worried or you think it is just a fluke We just got out of a 04 expedition that had lots of problems... (6 Alternators in 20,000 miles) I'm just really paranoid.
I have heard of this issue before with no problem in the transmission. It holds around 18 qts and has a high coefficient of expansion. If you really got it hot it could blow out some oil and still be ok.
Just some my thoughts. There could be a tranny issue, but if you have clean good fluid and a filter with it driving ok,, You are "?probably?" ok.
Yea, I'm def. hoping so. Fluid looks pretty good man...i'm hoping i just ran it a little too hard on a hot day with a little bit too much air in my tires
It was definately most likely to much for that day and boiled out. I would not worry being it is a 16 quart bin for trans. If you cheked the level once again and it was fine and has had no noice or knocks into any gear dont sweat it. Good luck and lower the air in those tires next time.
Id deffinatly let it cool off take it for a normal cruise on a paved road for a few minutes to get it to a normal operating temp and check the level again. No way to know how much you really lost with it burning off and being in the sand and all.
On another note id suggest keeping a lil fire extinguisher in the truck if you happen to have one laying around. Hot trans fluid spilling on the exasut will light up like you wouldnt believe. If your regularly running on sand like taht i would strongly recommend a supplimentary trans cooler. Im a big fan of the B&M brand over the regular fin and tube design. If you want to spedn a lil more $, 150-200? B&M makes a cooler with a fan on it that automaticlaly turns on when it gets too hot. Very nice setup.
