Too much HP (torque) can cause traction problems. I once had a '67 Mustang with a 351C-4V, 4 speed tranny and a 3.89:1 rear. It was quick on dry paving, but if it rained, it was dangerous to drive it.

There is no such thing as too much horsepower as long as you build the drivetrain and chassis to handle it, and YOU know how to manage it. Unlike cars, most of our trucks chassis can handle high horse...they won't twist up like a unibody. If you're worried about traction get some soft wrinkle tires that will help you hook up. But to be honest my friend, I don't think you need to worry about it unless you are building a truely radical powerplant. For example, most my buddies consider I have a "radical" engine but its no big deal to handle in a 3/4 ton truck.

If your knuckles ain't bleeding you did something wrong.

Just to take it to a different light YES... Daily drivers may be tooooo much with a radical engine...Horsepower is not cheap and can burn all the money you can find Very Fast...

I have seen radical Alcohol burning engines on the street BUT not every day..

Your friend is probally just thinking about `what is practicle`.
Glad you asked!!

It really depends on the vehicle and if it's set up for the ponys. A uni body might actually wrinkle the sheet metal under high horse power. Horse power is nice but you need to match the vehicle to it. It's not fun trying to stop with old 4 wheel drum brakes for instance.
