Back a while ago i got a brake booster and the pedel out of a truck to put in my 76 since it had manual brakes, now the brake light is on...it was never hooked up until now and apparently something is wrong. Also I noticed today when it is idleing and you go pump the brakes it idles the truck up is that suppost to do that or not? and what should I start out at with the brake problem? Would it be better to have the manual brakes or the power ones?
power brakes are better. if the pedal is low, the motion of you pushing the pedal down fills the booster with vaccuum from the engine and it idles up (up i think).
The brake system requires a hydraulic pressure push back of parts.
Things necessary to accomplish this are:
Non-interior rusted Master cylinder
Non-seizing calipers
Non-seizing wheel cylinders
Good brake shoe return springs
non-seizing working proportioning valve
Brake fluid absorbs water and gets worse the older it is.
I think you need to inspect all brake parts and flush the fluid.
ok so tomorrow I will go out and bleed out the system and check out all the cylinders. the cylinders and brake line have been all been replaced a while back. the master cylinder i presume is origional. the truck has been sitting for a few months with little movement. Could it possibly be the booster? did I get the wrong one for my truck? I did no modifications to install it except have to use the brake pedel that came with the booster since it dont come up the same height as the manual pedel did.
i had a bad master that leaked into and filled a booster. when i drained it there was about 6 oz of brake fluid. the pedal did like you said, pushed down and stayed to the floor.

Which brake light...the stoplights, or the low brake fluid warning light on the dash? If it's the dash light, that is controlled by the low brake fluid warning light switch that screws into the brake proportioning valve.
The switch is plastic, and over time develops minute cracks in the threads. When that occurs, just enough brake fluid seeps by the switch to activate it. Then the light on the dash comes on...and stays on.

Ok I went out to Advance auto the other day and ordered a new master cylinder and brake booster for a f100 and when they got it...it was the same as the old one that was on my truck.. Like Dennis said I need the push rod 13 and its 23 but the thing is the master cylinder didn't come with the mounting bracket all it came with was the booster itself...What do I do?
