i have a 77 f250 with a stock 460. i took it to get my carb rebuilt and the mechanic said my manifold is leaking a little bit of air, so i figure if i am going to have to take my manifold off anyways, i might aswell replace it with something that will get me a bit more preformance.
my questions are:
does anyone make a manifold that is a direct replacement for the stock but that flows better for more power, it needs to accept the stock 4bbl carb and have a provision for the original "chole stoke". ????
or.....
should i find go to a junk yard and find a manifold just like mine, then take it and have it ported and painted so it looks nice then put that on instead??
Believe it or not the stock cast iron "boat anchor" manifold is about the best for low rpm torque out there, that is what Super Ford magazine found out during a 460 manifold comparison. To about 2500 rpm they work good, after that they pretty much suck. Instead of having to find one in a wrecking yard, cleaning it, porting it and then painting it, it would probably be better to purchase an aftermarket manifold. One step up from stock would be an Edlebrock Performer #EDL-2166 ( good for "stock" and slightly up-graded camshafts), step two would be an Edlebrock Performer RPM #EDL-7166 OR Weiand #WND-8012 (both work well with stock cam, but you will definitely see higher HP & Torque with aftermarket camshaft compared with cast iron or Performer #EDL-2166. All these manifolds are a "dual plane" design, which promotes better Hp & Torque at lower RPM's than an open plenum design.
