I have a 04 FX4, driven about 35000 miles.
Last weekend, when I was driving normally on a flat road doing 50-60 mph, suddenly I hear this loud "fan-like" noise when I accelerated abit, then it went away again.
This happened again and then I felt like the truck lost abit of power and didn't accelerate normally. Still it kept cruising speed and I was able to accelerate abit.
This loud "fan-like" noise is only heard when the AT is in steps 1-3 but not in the OD (4th). The truck accelerates but not as before and I not pushing it, just normal acceleration. The rpm looks normal, meaning it's not jumping up relative to the noise.
I was thinking maybe it would be the converter not locking up, but it holds very well in OD.
I have checked the oil, the AT oil and other fluids. All gauges are normal.
I would really like to hear what this could be?
My cooling fluid level is normal as are all other fluids and gauges.
This loud fan noise can now always be heard exept when driving in OD (4th step).
Is this something that can be fixed or is this another problem.
There was a TSB for the 04s that pertained to fan clutch noise. There is an updated fan clutch for them, I had mine replaced under warranty. The noise on mine was most noticable at cold startup during fast idle. It is TSB 05-4-3 listed in the Recalls/TSBs section.
Thanx for the replies and the info, guys.
I went to the Dealer and they confirmed that it was the Fan Clutch.
I have bought a new one and will replace it myself since my truck is no longer under warranty.
This is my second failure in this car after driving almost 40k miles. The first failure was a worn-out tie rod
I am very happy with my truck and I have been doing alot of off-roading.

It's all in Icelandic but there are alot of pics there in an album called Jeppaferdir (translated: Off-road Traveling)
THX again for the replies.
