2000 Ranger 3.0L A/C problems
The A/C unit cools great then all of a sudden nothing but hot air. If I turn off the A/C for a couple of minutes, usually it comes back on. During these "hot" episodes, I checked and the compressor isn't engaged.
Any ideas as to the culprit in this mystery?

I'm not an expert, but it sounds like you have moisture in the system which freezes in the orfice and blocks the flow of freon. Overcharging could also be a possibility. If it's moisture, the system will have to be evacuated and refilled along with a new drier. Have someone with a set of manifold gages check the system pressure. Good Luck!
