brake questions

I just bought front and rear sets of pads from ART (Applied Rotor Technology)
and i am wondering

1) how many miles do you guys get on a stock set of pads?

2) those of you with the DRW can i do them myself in my driveway?

as i recently got a quote from a shop of $225 to just replace the fronts..I was also told by the dealer it would be $279 and the service rep told me they always have turn the rotors . sounds like bull to me. i felt the rotors and there is not a single scar or mark in them and no lip.

Mine is an SRW and I have almost 95K on my stock pads. That's some towing and some trips down the drag strip. I've had extremely good luck with the stock pads. FWIW--if I was putting on new pads I would definitely have the rotors turned by a COMPETENT shop. They will only take enough off to true them up and it helps with bedding in the new pads.

Back when I had my 92 F250. I got 120,000 miles out of the front pads. When I replaced them, I just went and got everything new from the hoses to the rotors. Sold the truck with 225,000 on it and the breaks were still good. I did mostly highway miles with little towing.

You don't get much life out of the 2nd set of pads because the calipers begin to gunk up and stick. If you are going to just do the pads get the system flushed out.

I agree completely. New pads will NOT perform nearly as well on old glazed rotors... Would you put in new pistons and rings without honing the cylinder bore? It the same concept. The components marry to one another. Friction parts leave behind the memory of the past. Turn your rotors! It's "best practice"

Thanks for the replies, I'll find a shop nearby that can turn them without taking too much metal off. like you said it's finding a "competent shop" thats the trick.

I'm kinda of glad I looked at the brakes the other day that's when I noticed the calipers were almost touching the rotors. then I would have been buying new rotors for sure
