Tip for carbureted engines

When I stuffed a 351W in place of the 300-6 last year, I topped it with one of those open element chrome air filters. It exhibited some frustrating problems (slow to warm up, coughing, sputtering, backfiring) whenever the temp dropped below 50 degrees, even to certain degree after the engine was fully warmed up. I read a carb rebuilding book that suggested that my problem was carburetor icing and poor vaporization. I just so happened to have a stock GM air breather in the garage with the Thermactor heat stove stuff intact. I made a sleeve to go around one of my header tubes with a fitting for the hose that goes to the breather. I anxiously awaited the first cold morning to arrive. When it did, boy was I a happy camper!!! If I didn't know any better I would say it was fuel injected! Give it about one minute of warm up time and it is ready to go. Even on a morning that we had a light frost I had no problems. I had questioned the wisdom of purchasing an Edelbrock, but I see now that it wasn't the carbs fault. Hope this may help others that are experiencing similar problems.

Amen brother. I wouldn't blame guys completely, but these aftermarket vendors push these chrome air cleaners, air gap manifolds, intake gaskets that block off heat riser passages etc. Not once will they say it will be detrimental to cold weather performance. But we need to ask ourselves when we take all this factory stuff off, why was it on there in the first place?
