mini e4od no 3rd or overdrive

i have a 91 ford with the mini e4 and i just swapped the transmission i found a used one. the very first time i ever put it in gear, w/o any wires hooked up, it started out in 2nd, then went to overdrive. but after that first time, it has not went in since then and it does not have 3rd or overdrive gear, just 1st and second is this a transmission problem or somethnig to do with wiring. i know if i just unplug the wiring harness from the tranny it locks into 2nd gear and stays, will not even shift to first manually. reverse works just fine. maybe a little harsh engaging but fine. is there some way i can hotwire the tranny to make it go into 3rd or od? i have been looking at the wiring diagrams all day and messing with it. still no luck. i was thinking about pulling the pan and seeing if a valve is stuck or somethnig. what is "supposed to happen" if you just unplug the tranny wire connector?
