Does the black part around the stereo come off or does the whole dash half to come off? I figure the black part will just pop off but I am just wanting to make sure. thanks.
Simply put, open the cup-holder partially, work your fingers under the cover and begin prying it off. It feels like it will break when you first start, but eventually it comes off.
You should be able to find quite a few threads on this very subject a here in the forum...
Btw... when you do take the bezel off, don't forget to put the metal clips back in the dash prior to re-installing. (You'll see what I'm talking about when you pop it off)

Curious... are you removing the ashtray, just to remove it? It shouldn't be necessary for the radio bezel removal.
Actually I'm modifing the ash tray into a IPOD dock, went and purchased all the PIE gear to use the proprietary IPOD dock but it results in just a loose cable that is typically routed to the glovebox. I'm going to take out the ash tray and make some modifications so when it opens I've got a IPOD dock right there to plug into. Not a smoker so I won't be missing the ash tray at all.
I don't have the ash tray (don't smoke anyway) i have the manual shift on the fly. I did drill a hole through that piece of plastic to run the wires from the back of the factory radio to my satellite radio. So no wires are showing and i think it looks really good. I can find some pictures if anyone cares.
It sounds to me like you are doing the same thing but with an iPod dock instead of a satellite radio.
Well moldy taters. Got the adapter plate for my other stereo went to go put it in and now I have to put a different wiring harness plug thing on it. Witch realy urks my taters because i just put one on there not to along ago for my last truck. Do they make adapters from a Dodge to a Ford?
On my XL with a manual trans, I have no ashtray or pull out cup holder. The Crutchfield instructions told me to start at the top, and yes the black piece around the stereo just pops off. The radio itself is screwed on with four 7mm fasteners.
