The grounded rod is a good idea. If you opt for professional installation ask for a UL certification inspection sticker and then talk to your insurance company about any possible discounts. If you're in the country check the distance from your grounding location to your well. You don't want the well pump shorted out by your lightning protection system.
Also what's the crime rate like in your neighborhood? If you use copper or aluminum wire for your lightning protection you want to make sure someone doesn't decide they could make some good money with your stuff down at the local scrap yard.
