Scraping sound.

S over the last few days my truck as developed a very loud scraping sound. It seems to be coming from the back of the truck and varies with speed. It only occurs under acceleration and neutral throttle, not while coasting.

My guess would be the rear brake, but I don't know squat about drum brakes and where/how to look for problems.

The truck is an '86 6.9 F250 4x4.

Any ideas?

Look at the inside of the wheel for grease/oil. Wondering if rear axle bearing going bad.
Are any of the rear brakes geting very warm? Might have a brake hanging up if you do. Just do a feel of the rear drum for temp difference after a drive. CAUTION they can get very HOT.
Also try backing up and applying brakes. You might have a small stone between the drum and shoes.

I back up (and use the brakes) everyday.

I looked under the truck today and didn't see any oil/grease.

Brake linings may be worn out.
That sounds more like a U joint to me though.

I replaced one u-joint a few months ago. I'll check the others. Maybe Saturday my dad will be home and he can take a look at the brakes for me.

Well, I crawled under it today and my new U-Joint has a crack in it.

I'd have never thought it would made a scraping noise...

What U-Joints do you guys recommend? maybe this time I'll be able to afford to replace them all...

If you still have receipt. Take it back for replacement. Some places have a replacement policy. Hopefully yours does.

I have run everything from an Advance Auto 10 dollar U joint to Spicer U joints to NAPA Super Joints that were about 35 dollars each.

The Advance Auto joints last just as long or longer than the others at 1/3 or 1/2 the price.
