I washed my truck yesterday since the four straight weeks of rain finally quit, got it all looking nice and pretty. I started the truck, reached over and turned the A/C on, turned the radio up just a bit, and then felt a distinct thump in the truck. Felt it everywhere, in my foot on the clutch, foot on the floor, and my butt and back on the seat.
No variation in RPMs, no change in A/C performance, no sounds from the engine.
I know I got some water in the tailpipe, always do...but I can't imagine it being enough to build up enough to pressurize and blow out.
Any ideas? It's never happened in the more than two years I've owned this truck.
Have you checked the tires to make sure that there is not a knot on one of the tires? I don't know why washing the truck would have caused this problem but seems like one of the only things that it could be. I could be wrong but i would start with checking the tires
Not to be a smart *** or anything, are you sure it was not just your tailgate falling? Same thing has happend to me several times at the wash. Open the tailgate to spray out the bed; and because I was in a hurry to put more money in did not shut it hard enough. And just before i pulled away, BAM! scared the crap out of me. I did not realize what had happend until i noticed my gate was down when i got back to the house. Just my input
Nope...tailgate was up, locked, and still up when I got home.
Towingparts32, I wasn't moving at the time, I was sitting still. Tires are a year old, still have good tread, and look good on both sides and the tread.
I noticed you said you turned on your AC. My compressor in my 2000 makes a real loud 'thump' noise when I turn it on. Unlike any other compressor I have ever heard. I can feel a slight vibration throughout the truck.
Not saying it is your problem, but just an idea. Mine is very noisy (but AC still works great)
I think it was just the A/C compressor finally kicked in . Where did you set the temperature control switch to? I set mine up a little from the coldest mark, and the A/C will kick with longer intervals.
A/C had already kicked in and was running through the entire event smoothly.
pgw85706, I hadn't touched the brakes at all since stopping the truck in the car wash, could that be the problem? Didn't touch them during or after starting the truck.
I would just pass it off as water in the muffler blowing out after boiling, "water hammer". Or could have just injested some water into the intake, and the sound you heard was it flashing to steam in the cylander, "water Hammer". just took it a momment to happen. If it runs and idles smoothly i would say it didn't hurt anything. Maybe a comp test to make sure.

have you ever heard a thump from turning the ac on before this????
i say this because this was a hot topic when i first started on fte, and everyone was complaining about a thump from the ac, i was like sweet mine doesnt do it, well after ownership of about 6mts, and 4k miles, i started to get the thump as well.
maybe the compressor was delayed for a few seconds and you already thought it engaged, but it hadn't yet.??
i like cddz's theory on water hammer, maybe it is.
have you gotten this thump since then?? also i noticed on mine, the thump varies in sound sometimes, sometimes its louder than other times
It's not the A/C compressor...let me throw that out there again. I had already turned the A/C on, heard the compressor engage, felt it running, and know for a fact that '94s in general don't have the excessive "thump" problem.
Water hammer sounds interesting, like it could definetly be the problem.
