Anybody been putting a load on their '08 and hear a whooshing sound like one of the windows is cracked open a bit? I thought I heard someone say this was the waste gate opening on the turbo, but I was nowhere near the 42 lb boost limit. I was accelerating up a gentle grade pulling my 10,000 lb fiver. It doesn't do it every time. I looked for a waste gate on the turbo housing but I could not see one.
I have had the same thing happen to me on my new 08. Right now I have about 5k miles on it, but no problems to this day. I figured if it was an issue I would through a CEL.
I loaded mine for a 1200 mile pull, I heard a loud almost siren sound......it was the Fan kicking on. Only under hard pull when warm did I hear it and only once in awhile.
WHat I did notice once was a very tinney like sound coming from the Tranny area at about 65-70 mph when pulling, out of tow haulmode (flat I95 highway) It almost sounded like a tin can rolling around in a tin wash tub???? Again this only lasted 20 - 30 miles then disappeared...(Wasn't shifting only boosting) the more boost, the louder then eventually went away???? Any suggestions other than wait till it pukes then find out what's up?
The 6.4 doesn't have a waste gate. What you are hearing is a phenomenon called compressor surge. I could go into a long disertation about it, but I will only say it is normal and won't hurt anything.

Hey Strut, just got back from Va 1650 miles, coming up the hills in the Poconos at the top the fan would kick in at the top of the hills, first time kind of scared us, thought a Boeing 747 was landing on us. Not really that bad. kicked on about 8 times during our trip. Found out I was hauling 16,650 ttl gross 25,350# from the cat scale. Man can this thing pull. I could keep it a any speed on the hills I wanted. Amazing, Got fuel at Port Jervis, NY coming home 2.69 a gallon, what a hill coming out of there, about 2,000 ft rise in 2 miles. 1665 miles computer showed 9.1 actual hand calcuated 8.726. Loved towing with this truck. liked the tow mode, but kicked it out a few times at bottom of hills. It really helps slowing. Transmission was perfect liked the control I had with it on hills, you could feel when it was ready to down shift when needed.

It wasn't the cooling fan, that makes a whole different noise and it only comes on when I've been pulling the load up a big long grade.

What is compressor surge and where can I read up on this?

If it is indeed surge, it is not good for the turbo(s). You can proably find a lot of info on one of the other forums (7.3 or 6.0). Do a search, it has been discussed at length many times. Did you watch the boost guage when this was happening? Surge will cause the needle to "surge" up and down. Did you hear this noise just after a shift? If so this is know as a turbo fart. It is basically excess boost that is not needed after a shift, and it has no where to go but out the intake. It is normal and won't hurt anything. I should say these issues are common with the other strokes and I can't directly comment on the 6.4 because I don't have one yet.
I wasn't sure if these had waste gates or not. Mine sounds like it's got a BOV (blow-off valve). I got the 6-speed and when I bring it up to around 2000 RPM with 20+ psi of boost then press the clutch to shift it makes that loud air release sound. I love it!! Not sure exactly what it is. I'm pretty sure there's no BOV on these rigs, guess it's just the turbos winding down quickly. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like after the strait pipe kits with the tunes come out.

The turbo needle doesn't move, but the whooshing sound does last 10 - 15 seconds. It only seems to happen on acceleration.
But I will pay attention next time to see if the turbo needle does move, or if it happens after the tranny shifts.
I'm going campingin a couple of weeks and there are some hills I need to climb.

Yeah, it sounds like you and SouthTexas have the same thing happening. My 7.3 has an open air filter on it, and you can really here it after a shift. Like I said the excess boost has to go somewhere after a shift, so you get the wooosh out the intake. When accelating when towing it will be more pronounced because of the higher boost. Cool, this is good news to me, because I was starting to think these engines don't make any of the normal diesel noises I've come to love.
Oh, I forgot about the surge. If your boost needle doesn't move, you most likely are not experiencing turbo surge. Usually surge happens when you try to push more boost and air flow than the turbo was designed for (tuners) and towing heavy. Usually this doesn't happen on a stock truck. Surge is kind of a chuffa chuffa type sound and it is the result of the turbo wheel stalling, as in it can't keep up with the air flow going through it. I would be very surprised to hear an engine with compound turbos surging.
Hope this helps.
Mine isn't a constant sound tho. It just occurs while when I press in the clutch and lasts less than a second. Turbo drops to 0, then spools right back up when I get on the gas. I didn't notice this on any of the automatics that I test drove. I don't think it's coming from the air box, and not a boost leak already checked. Maybe it's just a manual tranny thing, some of my friends have older diesels that make similar noises while shifting.

This doesn't sound like excess boost between shifts (turbo fart) since this lasts a prolonged amount of time, on the order of seconds, not a brief burst during a shift. You are correct in that I have a slush box.
