I recently acquired an 87 F-150 Lariat 4wd pickup from a friend at work. he has had the transmission recently serviced, but it is my belief the man did not perform the job correctly. I can not get the truck to go into passing gear when the accelerator is pressed to the floor, and it seems a little forceful when shifting first to second, and second to third. There is a linkage disconnected from the transmission that appears to go up to the carburetor, but that may not be the issue. I have Haynes #36065 manual, and it is does not provide me with too many illustrations or troubleshooting info on this straight six engine. It covers a wide array of engines and models, and is not very general to my model.
I am more electrically inclined, but mechanical presents no problems for me providing I have the right literature. I may have a vacuum problem, but not sure. What do you suggest, and what manual would be most beneficial for me with thorough mapping and illustrations as well as a troubleshooting guide.
On my 92 there is a "TV"(Throttle Valve) cable going from the trans to the TB or Carb. Your 87 has it too.
It's adjustment is critical to shifting especially down-shifting to Passing Gear.
My Haynes #36058 tells how to adjust it using feeler gauges at the Carb but there is also a part about the TV cable "rod".
Can you take it back where it was worked on? If so I would have them put it back in and adjust it. I've never done it ........but I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you how .
