95' 4.9 distributor question

so i decided to replace the plugs and cap and rotor on my 4.9 and the cap was so old that the hold down bolts broke off even after multiple applications of pb-blaster. so i had to go buy a new distributor and of course i compared the new to the old to make shure it was exactly the same before getting my core back. now what i discovered is a keyway just below the gears. the keyway only alows the distributor to go in, in only one direction. obviously the same direction the old one came out. but when i do that the rotor button is pointing a different way than the original was when i pulled it out. now i know your suposed to get cylinder 1 on tdc of compresion stroke mount the distributor and swing it for timing. so do i have to worry about the key way and the orentation of the rotor or should i just keep it simple?

I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but on the V8's, the bottom of the distributor drives the oil pump. Just rotate the oil pump shaft until it matches the keyway of the new distributor in a way that allows the rotor to point in the same place as the old distributor when it was removed. I may have misunderstood, though, so please correct me if that is incorrect.
