my 1986 Bronco II 2.9 won't start when the engine is cold. It only makes a clicking sound when I try to start it. If I put a jumper wire from the positive battery cable to the starter relay, it starts. What could the problem be?
Sounds like a bad starter relay, if when you jumper from the positive battery cable directly to the starter and the engine turns over and starts. How old is the battery? How old are the battery / starter cables? Might also be a matter of bad cables / connections / battery as well.
Do you mean a small jumper wire to the S terminal on the starter relay (were the elbow is) or do you mean a jumper cable type wire directly to the big positive wire going to the starter?
If you mean the first one, take the boot/elbow off, clean the inside, squish it up a little, and retry it.
