Sounds like she needs a charge. If its been years since its been serviced, I'd say at least have the refrigerant level checked as a prudent first step. Perhaps when you turn on the fan, you're pushing it over the edge with the low ammount of refrigerant that's in there and the systems' shutting down the compressor. As far as I know, there's no electrical association between the fan and compressor operation, but I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, I'm sure . There was a post recently with a schematic of the system with the control switches on it. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I didn't check your profile to see where your at, but man, I don't blame you guys in the south for keeping that cooler running full blast. I live in Canada and I think I used it twice last year, so I'm not sure why they don't make it an option. But then again, when it's 90 F here, were 'dyin'.

I tried to charge it but it wouldnt take and gauge was in the red. I thought to charge it you had to have the compressor running and the fan on high. Thanks

Study this thread. Embedded is a schematic courtesy of Rockledge and instructions where he explains you need to jumper the cycling switch that will continuously cycle the compressor and aid filling the system.
