Hi first post sorry if i posted wrong place. My dad has a 2002 Explorer with the v8. His check engine light came on. Coded as P0401 which is insufficient exhaust gas recurilation. We thought we had the problem fixed installed new EGR valve hooked back up reset codes worked fine for a few days. Then yesterday got check engine light again code is now P0402 which is excessive exhaust gas recuilating.
My question is when should I get vacuum to the egr valve? I can get no vacuum at idle to the egr. I don't know when there should be vacuum there to operate the valve besides when the pcm calls for it.
What are the possible causes for this?
Never had one code one way then the other.
Ty for your help U guys rock
PO401 (insufficient EGR flow, I think) in a Ford of that era is quite often a DPFE sensor gone bad... there was even an extended warranty offered on that one part due to it's issues in many Ford models. It would follow that a PO402 might also indicate that. I would check the two hoses that go the DPFE sensor to make sure they aren't plugged, and replace the sensor with the new design Ford dealer part (it's not that expensive) that is supposed to last longer. Your dealer will likely have a ton of them on the shelf, it's that common of a problem. FWIW, my DPFE on my 2002 Explorer V6 died in much the same manner a couple of years ago, fortunately I had a copy of the TSB in my hand at the time, and I saved a ton of money and effort by just changing the sensor (I had to pay for it, though, because I was just outside of the extended mileage window).. I put it on myself, took all of 15 minutes.
