Problem With Rear Axle/Differential...

I get a little carried away on my maintenance. I change the rear fluids out every 50k and the tranny every 25k. I check the tranny and rear end levels at least once a month. Most guys say this is overkill but I get 300k plus on every vehicle I have ever owned without any major breakdowns. It is a lot easier to maintain them than to fix them alongside the road in an unfamiliar area.

alright well i've driven over 50 miles and everything seemed to be great, until today. i noticed recently that when i turn left, i can hear a soft rubbing metal sound. sort of like what the brake pads would sound like rubbing on the rotor. it only happens when i turn the wheel to the left, even so slightly when i'm changing to the next lane over. i'm gonna take a closer look tomorrow, but what would cause something like this to happen when i'm turning?

Usually a noise while turning is a good indication of a bad wheel bearing, but in your case I think I would start by sliding underneath and look for shiny spots. Make sure that the differential is not shifting and causing something to rub. It also could be a loose wheel bearing. You might check it and see if it is tightened to specs.
