Ive got a 69 F100 with a 390. I want to upgrade my charging system(on a budget ) and I need some basic info. First, is the stock unit a 1G alternator? If so will any 1G fit or is it vehicle specific? Has anyone had any problems with a 1-wire unit like low output? I would like to go 1-wire if I can. Maybe a Powermaster 140 amp unit. Also I have read about upgrading to a 3G. Will a 3G fit without any modification to the brackets. Thanks for the help.
The one ground (I think this is what you are talking bout) is interchangeable with others. Try getting your stock alternator re-wound by a local alternator rebuild shop. This is WAAAAAAAYYYY cheaper than buying another one, and you can get it wound up to 200 amps in most cases. A buddy of mine got it done for about $140.
What do you need all that alternator power output for? I just picked up a 1992 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor and it only has 140 amps alternator for all the radios and lights. Even with 4 batteries, 2 under the hood and 2 in the camper, 90 amps was way more than enough.
Extra amps help keep the voltage constant under draw, which in turn helps keep the batteries from tanking on you. Also a big stereo needs a LOT of amps to keep the voltage steady.

If you are running a big stereo that loud as you go down the road, you are just plain being unsafe. You need to hear the other guys horn. Besides that a stereo, in what for all practical purposes is a 55 gall drum, makes no sense what so ever. On top of that, it's a truck for God's sake, act like it.
Mainly, I like the powermaster 1-wire alt for the look. I just wanted to know if anyone had upgraded and if so, how it worked out for them. I am in the process of adding a amp and sub however, so the added power my be needed to keep it bumping.
