I'm looking for some advice on up-grading my engine. I'm looking for a light powerful engine. I now have a 300 6cyl, I would like a v-8 that is about 300-400 hp. I would like to know the weight differences of the 302, 351, and 460. I am not sure what will fit my T-18 tranny.
Any advice or opinions would be greatly apreciated.

Go to http://www.fomoco.com and in their text book it displays the weights of most ford engines. The 460 isn't there but the 429 will weigh almost the same.
Both the 302 and 351W will fit your tranny, to do the swap you'll need the motor mount perches from a donor truck, a new crossover pipe for the exhaust and a rad for a 302/351W. These are the same things you'd have to change for any V8 swap but you won't need a different tranny if you go with a 302 or 351W. Both the 302 and 351W are respectable motors capable of producing 300+ HP. I would go with the 315W though because it will produce the power your looking for without sacrificinig low end torque.

You'll also need to move the trans crossmember
forward about 4". Which'll mean new driveshafts
front and rear.

You're still better off using the 300cid L6 than
changing to a V8, Just go to
www.cliffordperformance.com, they'll have
all the parts you need for a stout 6...
you do not have to move the trans cross member foward for the 302 and the 351w, i did this swap in my 1983 f-150 4x4, it had a 300 in it i put in a 302.
Thanks, Super Dave, man I could swear that beast weighed as much as my 351W when I pulled it out...
I also agree that you do not need to move your transmission cross member, I did the swap on my '82 2wd and did not have to change anything from the flexplate back.
If you have a budget the size of the national debt, my dream engine is a Stroked 351w that displaces 427 cubic inches with a set of stage 2 trickflow aluminum heads. it puts out about 400hp and 450 flbs torque with regular unleaded that weighs the same as a cast iron headed 302 and then there is still the option of putting a supercharger on it.........(wake up) oh back to reality.......
but if you do have an unlimited budget you could look into this there are several companies that you could look up on the net, D.S.S. motorsports is one company......
