I'm getting ready to replace the radius arm bushings on my 95 (2WD, Flairside, 302, 5-speed, 198000 miles, bought her brand new) and have a couple of dumb questions. I have read a lot of the threads on this subject, and think the easiest way is to remove the rivets and bracket. That's what the dumb questions are about.
First dumb question - What is the best way to get the rivets out? What is the best tool to use to grind them off? I don't have any kind of hand grinder, unless you can use a drill?
Second dumb question - everyone talks about "grade 8" bolts. Will the local auto parts (NAPA) place know what I'm asking for? Or would a hardware store (like Ace) be a better place to get them?
Thanks for the help.
There was enough movement in my arms to take a portopower or pry bar and move the wheel forward to replace the bushings(95 4wd) just make sure you don't over extend the rubber brake lines by leaving the wheel hanging all the way down.
My local Ford garage just moves axle forward. And I have done it dozens of times ,with no problems. They say it stresses the center bushings but any I every did i could almost move axle forward far enough to do it buy hand .
Most of these rides have more than 100000 miles and the pivot bushing going bad any time after the radius bushings is to be experted. 140000 is the norm . We have state inspections and thats when they go bad here . Do it how ever you feel comfortable with . 3 hrs 1 way , 2 the next .
Quickest way to remove rivets is to grind head off and pound out. Good luck on swap
