starting issues

I've got a 67 F100 240 and it doesn;t want to start. At the ignition, I don't get anything at all, or I get the click-click-click of the solenoid. When I jump the solenoid all i get is the same clicking noise. I took the starter to have it tested and it said it was good. I replaced the solenoid and reinstalled the starter, and still have the same results. Tomorrow I am planning to purchase a new starter and install it, but I was wondering if there is something I am missing?

Any suggestions?

I would take a close look at the battery cables for corrosion. The symptoms you describe are often caused by poor connections.Quite often the ground cable. Also you should make sure the starter relay is bolted down solidly as the mounting bolt also provide it's ground.Hope this helps.

I found that something was hanging up? I took the battery cable loose and heard something release (the solenoid?) Now it starts up just fine. What could cause that? It was causing a real draw on the system. Headlights wouldn't come on...dash lights were dim...etc.

I do need to address the solid mounting on the solenoid, because it is loose. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Took the battery cable loose from where? The battery itself, or the other end where it mounts to the solenoid? Anyhow, it does indeed sound as if you just had a bad connection and moving it around helped to make contact again. Probably not so much a real draw on the system as not enough draw...

I would remove and clean and tighten all connections; both pos and neg posts on the battery, neg batt. ground on the block, both sides of the solenoid and solenoid to starter. Make sure the metal terminals on all pos. connections aren't touching anything except the posts they're bolted to. (Sometimes you can turn the terminal when you tighten to connection and touch something grounded with it, causing a dead short.)

Also, look at the condition of all cables and terminals. Corrosion, melted or cracked insulation are all signs that cables should be replaced. And those clamp-on battery terminal ends from the parts store are really only a temporary fix. Best to replace the whole cable.

I took the cable loose from the positive battery post. I still have the issue...start sometimes, not others. Wehn I take the cable loose and put it back on...it starts up. I firmly mounted the solenoid...checked all the connections, cleaning them up. Still have the issue. Could the starter be hanging up and causing this? It tested good at the parts place.

When it "hangs up"..or whatever it does...the positive cable will begin to get warm.

Could indeed be the starter hanging up. Get a shim from the auto parts store (usually available in the "Help" line of parts) and shim the starter out.

next time it dont start, with the key off turn the motor over. most time this can be done by simply turnin the fan with both hands. if ya have to rock it back and forth a bit before it turns staters hung, then try and start with key. sounds like the starter's stickin to me then id replace or rebiuld it

yeah, i would say your starter is hanging up, or since you say you loosened the cable and put it back and it fired up, it could be a "faulty" cable. here is a tip i did on mine....when you clean your battery terminals and other wiring connections under the hood, put a small amount of grease or lube on the wire before connected and it will take care of the Corrosion issues you may have. i did this to my truck 5 years ago and have had know problems as of yet with any Corrosion.
