ok i need some help here guys 'n' gals . i've been through 3 electric pumps in about as many weeks . at first it was mounted under the truck on the floor board but it ended up being a problem there so i moved it to the firewall drivers side as low as possible and still they are a quiting .it's wired to the ignition switch so as soon as you turn the key on it's on. . normally id run 'em under tank level and mounted on the frame rail on any other car { and at the rear as most are pusher's }, but not too many places to put em here and the pickup is at the top of the tank unlike the newer stuff . so any suggestions as to brand and capacity of pump and maybe one capable of pulling not pushing and also where are you all mounting them . i'm tired and too busy to sit and stare to try and figure it out so , HELP!!!!!!!!!!
If you are using the pumps that look like an inline fuel filter, they fail regularly. Go to Napa and get a Carter fuel pump, they are a vane type pump. I have run several of these and have never had one fail.
well to get it goin' again i've got another of the same pumps on her , but next week we're goin' out and buying agood high quality vane pump as this isn' gonna do and there are only so many times and things being a tight a-- is gonna work . . i thank you gentlemen for your responses and i'm off as ever to work again !!!!
I have been using a Carter #CRT-P4594 (vane type) electric fuel pump that I bought thru the Summit catalog for 3 years now. Max pressure is 7 lbs, which is what my Edelbrock carb wants to see. The gas tank on the 56 is a siphon tube that runs from the tank bottom, up thru the top and down thru the floor. I had it mounted under the cab just below the tank and it worked flawlessly. I have moved it to the passenger side frame rail since I mounted a rear tank.
thanks randy jack i'm chatting with the tech dept. at summit now as the stuff available here at the parts houses ain't workin' it just ate its 4th one the second this week and i just put it on today ! my tank is below the cab left side and my pickup tube is on top and no room underneath with the linkages , headers etc . i had the first one mounted to the floor pan and i think the heat from the headers and pipes might have helped kill it . ah well hopefully summit can come up with something !
I'm using the same Carter pump as Randy. I noticed that as I reved the engine, the pump would speed up slightly, at least it would get louder. I bought a electric fuel pump kit from Painless Wiring that has a circuit breaker and a relay. A nice kit that cured that voltage surge. I also bought a rubber isolater kit to mount the fuel pump, it is now quieter by about 50%. I think I bought that stuff from Jegs. Rod...

Just about every car/truck generating system puts out a little more above idle than at idle; so everything gets a little more juice. But if it was that signifiicant a difference, I'd suspect your pump was fed by too small a wire. What do you use to energized the relay?
well it didnt have a relay or anything . when it comes to the electrical system of a car i usually farm it out as i dont have a damn clue ! hell i'm still waiting on a good freind of mine to come over and see about rewiring the whole truck . he's an sae certified master tech so i know what he's gonna know what he's doin' . i'm getting frustrated though as out of all the vehicles here i only want to drive the 53 .
Could it be you need a one-way check valve between the pickup and the fuel filter before the elect pump. The fuel could be running back into the tank causing the pump to cavitate and heat the motor over and over. Have a great day, chuck.
now that's something i never thought of . i went through this with my late model gmc it wouldn't start and all it was was a one way check valve in the pump that had quit . i'll have to check into that also . might do it anyway not a bad idea !
