Check with a local engine builder specifically one who does mainly race engines. It doesn't take much to get a BB to make Hp
these shops usually have a recipe for Hp that they are willing to share. A good ignition, intake, bore to clean it up, and a big cam should get you close. Stroke it, then you will be able to pull your house off its foundation. It really depends on your budget etc.. Good luck though hope everything works out

You can get 550 out of a non-stroked 460 pretty easy. Strokers are fun, but in your case maybe unnecessary. I can give you all the details of how to make a 520 hp 460 that will run on pump gas and idle decently!!!

All engines are nothing more than air pumps! The more air you can move threw the engine the better. Cheapest way is to have a good machine shop rework iron heads (port, bigger valves, reshape chambers, etc.), carb selection is also important but you have to have something to bolt the carb to, I would suggest a good dual plane (or single depending on where you'd like to make your power)aluminium manifold and spend a few bucks having it port matched to your reworked iron heads. Piston & cam selection would be the next place to look for added ponies out of a stock bore & stroke 460 (compress ratio & powerband respectivelly). Of course I am assuming your exhaust is upgraded with headers, etc. to provide optimum flow and scavanging. The air pumps enemy is restriction of flow!
Hope this will help, Dan H.

Sorry for not getting back with any of you guys yet. I'm still out of town, which means not at my computer, which means I'd have to re-write everything (from memory this time). I'll be able to get the full list of parts, etc. out to everyone shortly. Just bear with me.

Here it is....finally. Well, actually these are the basics of the engine. I can give very specific parts and part numbers of the parts I would go with, but most guys like to make those decisions for themselves. Anyway, take a regular old 460, bore it out 0.030 or 0.060 (0.060 will get you about 12 cubes and if your making over 1 hp per cube that's a bunch of hp). You'll want to make the bottom end stout at the very least go with CJ/SCJ/truck rods if not aftermarket. Pistons should be forged, obviously. The keys to a strong engine are compression, heads, and cam. Here's where the choices make a big difference. Compression should be right at 10:1. That is not hard to do, especially if you have your choice of heads. The best heads on the market, for the money and ease of use, are the Edelbrocks. With typical flat-tops and the 75 cc chamber Edelbrocks you should be very near 10:1, depending on your deck height, how much you bored the block, gasket bore and thickness, and the particulars of the piston including valve relief size and compression height. You can have the Edelbrocks ported but you shouldn't need to to hit 520 hp. The next big choice is the cam. I think this is the magic stick, no pun intended, to the entire combo. It's the Crower Street Roller part number 22401. It's a beautiful grind. 275/284 advertised 234/244 @ 0.050 with lift of .570/.572. They have it listed as a level 4 with power from 2500 to 6000. Believe me, in a bored 460 it will have plenty below 2500. The best thing about the cam is that you get a modern aggressive grind on a roller cam, without insane amounts of lift, i.e. 95% of the "goodness" of a roller cam without the "badness" that comes with mucho lift. The cam will be very easy on parts. Some of you old timers or enthusiasts may notice that this cam has the same 0.050 duration as a 429 Cobra Jet cam. Since it's a roller it has less seat-to-seat duration which means better idle (CJ's didn't idle that bad to begin with), more vacuum, and snappier low-end that the CJ's, couple those cam characteristics with the bigger bore and most importantly the longer stroke of the 460 and you get a "good" idle, strong low end AND a lot of horses on the top end. Top the whole motor off with a good dual plane (read: Weiand Stealth) and about an 850 carb and you'll be the king of street/strip. You could sqeak out a few more horses with a single plane but the Stealth's are so good up to around 6000 it's really not worth it unless you spend the vast majority of your time at the strip. That combo should get you around 520 hp @ 5500 and over 500 ft.lbs. from 2000 to 5000 and topping out with dang near 600 ft.lbs. at 3500-4000. Well folks, I hope that's what you were asking for. Maybe that will quench your thirst for Ford power.....or maybe just whet your appetite!!!!!

bigsnag,

Thanks for the info on the 460 rebuild. I have a '88 460 in my van and am looking at rebuilding it and changing the exhaust. I can only find hypereutectic pistons for the '88-'89 460s. The one shop I spoke with indicated this was due to emissions changes. If I change my heads, would this expand my options and possibly allow forged pistons?

Thanks,

Fish
