I have a 2003 F-150 FX Off Road with a 5.4 that I bought used with 35K.
After about 6K the Bank 1 lean code has been the problem.
Dealer changed 1 O2 device on drivers side.
Had another guy (Ford service tec) have a look. He hooked up the ole laptop and we drove while he monitored. He could not see anything that was out of line.He said the MAF was a little high so he suggested the MAF.
Checked for vacume leaks.
I replaced fuel filter, MAF, PCV and a few Vac lines just because.
Service light back on and have not had codes read yet.
Any Ideas would be very helpfull.
Also, I'm a newbey to the site as well as the chatt thing.
The site looks like a great place to be.
If it's throwing the service light you have a code. A code reader is very handy to have and since you can get them with a programmer you can get a performance improvement as well. Do you have a non-stock air filter?
The Auto Zone pulled the 0171 code last night. I'm saving now for a SCT programer and Tune for my 05 GT that will pull thw codes, this may speed things up.
I thru a can of Seafoam in the tank last night as well and am thinking about cleaning the EGR ports this morning. As long as this is something a garage mechanic can do. I am running the stock air filter and as far as I can tell everything else is stock.
Well, back from the dealer, Tec checked out everything and even drove 60 miles with the laptop. all of the fuel trims are next to perfect and he can't find a thing wrong.
I'm sure the light will be back on again. I'll ley you know what happens and when.

Not sure if the SeaFoam did the trick or if it was the cat switch the dealer said got bummped when some else did the rear main.
Hope it stays this way!
Well,Well,Well. The ole light is back on again. My last ettempt was to remove the o2 after the cat and clean. Changed one more Vac line just because.
I have read in another topic that water in gas or just cheap crap may cause this P0171 code. Could it be that something in the motor setup requires a higher octane fuel? The code seems to stay off longer after I have added some octane boost or Seafoam to the tank.Could I also maybe have a problem with one of the injectors?Would it be wise to swap injectors from side to side?
Well, after looking around some more I found the PCV 90 degree boot on the back of the intake to be somewhat out of place. Looking at the boot I could see no holes or cracks, Maybe the rubber had lost it's life and did not hold as well as when it was new. I had to replace the hole assembly to get this from the dealer. $65.00.
I also installed a couple of mil eliminators at the after cat 02's. (something they use after installing headers at the Mustang shop I visit way to often.
So far no lite on.
Does anyone konw if these eliminators at the 02's will cause anyother problems?
