no codes

How can I have an engine light but have no codes? I have tries a scan tool and a meter.The scan tool goes through a couple of sensors and quits and the volt meter reads =/- 12 volts.Ron

Even if the light was off, you would still get codes. You would get a code 11 telling you everything is ok. Also you have different codes depending if you do a key-on-engine-off or a key-on-engine-running test.

f2,How long should it take for the computer to react.Today I tried using the volt meter method.Jump from the big block to the self test plug and put my meter in the #4 slot on the big plug.I got no sweeps just 12V for about a minute with no other response.I have tried the samll scan tool with the same results.Ron

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Mar-02 AT 11:08 PM (EST)]As soon as you put the jumper in, you will hear the engine react, and you will start getting codes a very short time later. I assume you have the diagram to hook it up right, so I am going to guess maybe you have a problem with the wires going to the connector. You wouldn't happen to have access to another ford vehicle? You could try to retrieve codes from it to build your confidence up and verify you are doing everything right.

f2,Thats where I got my info.I tried it again yesterday with the same results.I can hear the fuel pump and I think the air by pass but thats as far as it goes.I used a multimeter.Ron
