Engine squeak?

i have a 1971 ford f-100 with a 351 windsor. over the years it has been sitting, and started up every once in a while. recently, i put an actual exaust on it so i could work on it. now, it has developed a screeching sound when i rev the engine sharply (pedal to floor and release quickly). it only screeches when i do that. could this be a bent valve or something? it dosnt sound like a belt, and you can barely stay under the hood when it happens and all the belts are tight. oil is to the full line on the dipstick, it has good gas and all other fluids. new electrical system and re built carb.

its also running really rough,, and backfireing when idleing. im going to pull the truck out and re check the timing. what else would cause an engine to run like that?

another quick question and then im done. just to make sure my memory hasnt failed me, after pulling the distributor completley out, you have to make sure the engine is on top dead center on cylinder one, and the rotating thing inside the distributor is pointing to the #1 cylinder spark plug wire, correct?

ok so i re checked th timing, just with the distributor, and it runs smooth. the squeak was a loose alternator bolt. so all is good on that side of town.

but. theres always a but.

ive had this ticking sound that i havent thought much about, it sounds like my rocker arms are loose, is that what it could be?

and when i hold it at a steady idle speed, probably around 2k - 2.5k (no tach, haha), it still backfires. its not that loud, but its puzzleing me.

FYI, 2000-2500 RPM is pretty far past idle. A '71 would have points unless it has been upgraded. If it still has points I'd replace those and gap them with a feeler gauge, then set the timing to spec. If you still have issues I would check out the accelerator pump on the carb. With the truck off, open up the air cleaner and look down the throat of the carb (push the choke open if you have to). Open the throttle and you should see two nice streams of gas squirt from the front at the venturis. If that still looks good and you're having issues, I'd run a compression test.

if the carb checks out and the compression test checks out, you could have a bad cam lobe or bad timing chain... or worn or loose rockers... or a bent pushrod or two... any number of things.

Sounds like you have a fouled/misfiring plug to me.
