adding headers w/stock exhaust pieces

alright, I'm looking at adding headers after I've put a catback gibson exhaust and a cai on my 01' 3.0l.....however, since I'm only adding a catback exhaust instead of replacing the entire exhaust system, I'm worried that the increase of airflow from the headers going to the stock crossover pipe will create back pressure....however, the gibson headers I'm looking at are a direct replacement and work w/the stock crossover......so I'm wondering if there's anybody out there whose added headers using some of the stock exhaust and how it's worked out for them

I have jba shortie headers and gibson dual sport catback and it works fine for me. It pulls harder in the topend. From what I've been told, headers are a bigger asset to the 3.0 than on my 4.0.

do you think I'll have any problem w/back pressure if I put headers on w/those remaining stock exhaust pieces???? And why would headers be a bigger asset to the 3.0 and the 4.0??

My understanding is the exhaust manifolds on the 3.0 are somewhat restrictive, while the manifolds on the sohc 4.0 are pretty free-flowing. That would lead to the conclusion that headers on a 3.0 would be more valuable than on a 4.0 (especially since I have dyno data that says they add nothing to a 4.0).

Since all stock Rangers have the same size exhaust piping, its hard for me to understand how a catback would gain any power for a 3.0, however it would change the sound.

okay, so if I add some headers, would it be fine if I don't change any of the exhaust pieces??? And if I do add headers and don't change the exhaust, would kind of performance gain could I expect??

Also, not all motors respond well to reducing exhaust restriction. It depends on the valve configuration, but the 4.0L has a lot of torque and the valves are tuned for it. This causes the motor to naturally restrict itself at high RPM. This also mean that freeing up the exhaust has less of an effect since the exhaust is not the major choke point. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the 4.0L can't benefit from performance exhaust systems, I'm saying the returns for the investment are not as great as the returns for the 3.0L.
