When I purchased my '93 in '04 the owner told me it was going to need an engine since it had 181,000 miles on it and the bottom end rapped when started. I thought I was being prudent when I bought a Ford crate engine on ebay so I'd be ready when it finally broke.
It now has 212,670 on it and still raps when it starts and still runs great. So now I'm thinking the only reason to change the engine is for the fun of it. Is there anything I can do to a crate engine to make it more fun? That is without spending more than I paid for the engine, ($800.00), in the first place.
Thanks.
4.9L Inine 6 ..... 5.0L V8, 5.8L V8, etc ..... what is under the hood of the truck now .... and what is the crate motor ... since you don't know they may not be the same.
Probably closer to 19 GPM for the Man O War. The 4.9L has its little noises ... but they tend to hold up for a 1/4 to Half a million miles without too many problems with proper oil and plug changes and keeping the coolant level correct. Mine makes a noise like you are saying yours does .... I have only had mine for 7000 miles or so. 4.9L is one of the best truck engines out there .... when I bought mine I knew this and only wanted a 4.9L or a 4.3L if I found a good bowtie candidate.
How are you getting 19MPG ... is that highway, combined or mostly city, I usually get 15.5-16.5 mostly city and 17.5 mostly highway.
19 mpg is highway driving under 70 mph in a fleet type, (no extras), full size f150 with a 5 speed manual. (I run the tires about 37 psi too). Over 70 mph and with a little extra right foot and it'll easily drop to the 16-17 range.
