I agree with wb6vvv , With all the research I did before buying my reconditioned 460ci motor, I found out if the 460ci is stock a 600cfm carb is all you need, I used a Holley 670cfm street avenger carb, your engine could be running way to rich - that will cause the plugs to go blackish....

trust me with the upgrades i have on this thing, that 800 is not to big. i took a holley 850 DP off of it and replaced it with the edelbrock. i am going to run a compression check before i do anything. hows that sound to you bear? think i might actaully get this thing running?i dont kow, with my skills i might confise the harmonic balancer with the flywheel.

About your carb size, unless that motor revs to the 6000 rpm, the 800 and the 850 DP are to big. But then if you are so damned smart, why are you here asking advise to get the motor running? I'm done with know everything, just ask you, type of guys, yet here you are with a problem that basic troubleshoot skills and engine knowledge would solve.

Bear you have a lot of experience and have as I ran a garage, built successful race cars and built a lot of engines. We get on here to help people out and give advice when they ask for it. They have the option to take or not take the advice. You get upset, I just consider the source. Life is too short to let this stuff bug you.
