351W or 351C?

First I have to say I am not a Ford guy and don't know much about them.

A friend of mine has a 1980 Bronco that he wants to put a 351C in. I told him to put a 351W in it instead for better lowend torque. Now, after searching the internet for info on the 351W H.O. that he has, I can't find any. Can someone clue me in on the 1984 4 barrel H.O.? He also has a 1978 351C . Can you clue me in on that engine as well? We plan on using headers, performer intake and a more modern cam. We want to make good lowend torque for pulling. What should we do? TIA

What engine is in there now? 1980 Bronco V8's: 302; 351W; 351M; 400 were all available.

>>> No such thing as a 1978 351C. The 351C engine was discontinued after 1974, and replaced with the 351M. <<<

>>351C's were never installed in F100/350's or Bronco's. <<

My mistake, the 351C is a 69.

He had a 289 in it. I don't know who put it there, but it has all kinds of problems, so we yanked it. I don't know which engine it came with from the factory, but it is long gone.

What is the compression ratio on the 84 351W H.O.? What do the heads flow? Should we go with a C or the W? Thanks.

The '69 351C will have more compression but will likely need head work to be compatible with unleaded fuel. Intake and cam selection will be limited compared to what's available for the windsor as well. The '84 351HO is about 8.5:1 compression, but has a pretty decent cam in the neighborhood of 0.450" lift, and should produce 275-300hp with a good exhaust system. Longtubes are the only way to go if low rpm TQ is the goal.
