How hard is it to replace the seal where the drive shaft comes out on the drivers side rear? It is leaking. And I am doing the breaks.... Sounds like the front may be a challenge?
I too am leaking on that side. My cousin has been a mechanic for years and owns a Expy also. He just did my rear brakes and showed me the biggest issue is removing that bar in the back. We are going to NC for a tuna trip not this coming weekend but the next weekend. When we return, since we are going the beach w/the trucks, he is going to change all my fluids afterwards and will be doing the seal also. I'll keep you updated if you haven't already done it yourself. He said its not to bad of a job but that is also coming from an experience mechanic.
If it is leaking from the hole the driveshaft enters the diff...then it is most likely your pinion seal. If it is the pinion seal you will see diff fluid sprayed in an arc on the undercarrige.
Not that big of deal to replace. there are instructions to do so on this site. Just search pinion seal...or pinion seal replacement...ect.
The oil is 90 wt. If you have a limited slip diff then you will also need a friction modifier. get it at any autoparts store.
Search the forum for all the tips you will need to do this, it's not that bad of a job but it wouldn't hurt to read about pitfalls you could avoid and some very neat tips.
One thing you may want to consider is to replace your parking brake shoes, I got it for around $20 from Autozone for the kit, but it may need to be ordered. They do fail and for the price, it would be a good thing to do.
Sorry, I thought you said Driveshaft...Did you mean Axle? On the sied of the diff? Then search "axle seal" and you should come up with the needed info.
If you replace the seal, check the bearing as well. A bad bearing is what caused my seal to leak. Went ahead and did both sides. All rear differentials use 75W-140 synth oil, plus friction modifier for controlled slip type diff.
I've replaced both seals on our 98 Exp. and brakes since one side was soaked in oil. It turned out to be a easy job. Went to Ford to get the seals and oil and modifier. Read somewhere that the aftermarket stuff wasn't very good. I use the Chilton's manual and it explained the seal replacement very well. Bought the manual at Kragen's.
