I have a 93 F-150 5.0 i was wondering what the air tube on the Catalytic Converter is used for. Also do i need it?. Or can I just buy any replacement cat that fits my pipe? also do i need both cats on there
These trucks have an emissions system that pumps air into the exhaust on cold starts to help the cats heat up and burn off the rich fuel mixture, that's what the tube is for. I have a complete custom exhaust on my truck utilizing an aftermarket cat with no air tube, and it passes emissions no problems.
Screw it i took the cats off on my truck and i run hooker headers. 3 inch collector and 1 5/8 inch tubes.... Im running to 3" flows.... But im not happy with them. I plan to change the muffs, but everything takes time and money. Before i put the headers on i took one cat off and ran to one 3" flowmaster. It ran alot better.

So i could just cap that off and be all peachy? My local exhaust shop quoted me over 400$ for new cat and single exit in front of rear pass tire. Thats why i would rather just cut the old cats off and install one universal and new muffler.
There's no reason not to run a cat, emissions are improved, noise inside the cab is reduced(acts as a resonator), and there is no performance hit. You could disconnect the air tube and remove the hard portion so it's not rattling around.
Why are you changing the cat may I ask? Is it broken or rusted out?
well there are 2 cats on there now and i think the second in line has been cutted. So just wanted to start over with a clean slate. Yes I have to pass emmissions here. The place does mine for me just does the snifter test no real inspection of the system. I dont understand the 2 cats as well I just got off the phone with a local shop that said i have to have both cats or the truck will not perform right. I think thats crap because i could go the whole damn thing and be better off, but would have a night fine to go along with it.
No, you don't need both cats or any of the original exhaust to make the motor "perform right". The original setup uses a dual stage cat, there's half in front of the air injection tube and half behind it. The rear cat sees the extra air injected at cold starts to help burn off the rich fuel mixture. But once the engine reaches operating temps the extra air is just vented to atmosphere, so all you got to do is make sure they are not doing the sniffer test on a stone cold motor.. which is not much of an issue usually.
As long as the rest of the emmissions stuff is working right, a single generic cat works just fine. On a 1993, you should have only one O2 sensor mounted in a short tube just above the "Y" in the manifold pipe. On a later model where there is an extra O2 sensor after the second cat you would have issues.
Wow ty all for the posts. It has opened my options up for a exhaust upgrade. As long as my good wife doesnt kill it. One of the real reasons for the upgrade is the slight loss in performance over the last few weeks. The start is starting to fell like its being held back by something when I give it WOT it seems really doggy. I have replaced everything else but the exhaust, and clutch but the clutch isnt really sliping or anything. So what i understand is that I can cut off the whole system from infront of first cat and place a new cat, muffler, and tail pipe. I was thinking about increasing the size to 3 inch single out in front of rear tire. Would 3inch pipe be fine or to much. Also there is this part through summit http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
Would this be worth it. Is Catco a good quality product? Thank you again for all the responses

Check your air and fuel filter first .When I went to the muffler shop I was going to use a single 3" ,no cats and a crossover made . But was told I could have a custom made 2.25 magnaflow dual setup no cats for less. ($385.00 installed )I love it! A 3" single will be fine but if you go duals its to big. Unless LOUD and popping is ok. Summit is a good company to buy from . Pat

How does that magnaflow sound? I didnt have any cat on my truck wheni bought it and it ran fine onliest reason i put one on is so i can pass inspection and the exhaust shop i went to is stupid!!!!! They do visual inspections here.
Has a nice rumble at idle , gets louder the harder you step on it. But not as loud as a flow master. The whole system is welded solid and will drop out of the vehicle in one piece with 6 bolts! Nice simple design. You could put a 2 in 2 out cat in it if necessary to make it quieter and emissions legal.Pat
