Haven't posted for a year or two, so its good to be back. I have a '72 F250 sport custom, 2 wheel drive, 360 V8, automatic transmision, with 79,000 miles. The problem I have is when the fuel tank gets to about half empty, the engine starts to sputter or hesitate kinda like a misfire. As soon as I fill up the tank again the engine runs fine. What causes this? I would appreciate any ideas.
A fuel system sucking air will cause that symptom. For example pinholes in the fuel supply draw tube inside your tank, as a result of condensation over the decades. . . . .

Thanks for the feedback. I dumped in a bottle of Lucas tune-up in a bottle with the last tankfull of fuel. Thought it wouldn't hurt to cleanout the fuel system a little. When I get down to a half a tank, which won't take long, I'll see if the sputtering is still there. I got a feeling it will be.
I had the same problem on my 70 with the tank behind the seat when it got to 1/4. I replaced the pickup tube thinking it had pinholes in it. When I ripped the old one out it was more or less perfect wound up it had a little trash floating around that would block the pickup tube when it dropped so low. While I had the tank out I flushed it real well and not have any problems since. If you flush it like I did with a water hose I would suggest letting it air dry overnight and into a hot day to dry as much water out as possible.
Don't forget that Ford trucks of this vintage have a cannister type fuel filter in the fuel pump. The filter is in a tomato juice sized can with serrated edges, that screws onto the pump. Most ppl have no idea there's a fuel filter in this location, so it rarely gets changed.
On the auxillary tank (if so equipped) fuel pump sender's fuel pickup tube, is a plastic mesh filter screen. It slides over the end of the tube.
