Hi, I have a 1986 F250 4X4 that has 5.8HO on the air cleaner. I was told it had a 351m in it by the former owner but from what I have learned on this forum it should have a 351w. The motor has never been changed the truck is all original. I don't know how to tell the differance in the motors but it looks like a big block? Is there a simple way someone could tell me how to tell what I have or somewhere to get the numbers off of it and look to see what I have.
sombody might have changed the air cleaner lid.i did on one of my trucks.it was a double snorkel off and 80's mustang.it's hard to tell the diference between the 351w and the302w.different deck heights .if your sure the motor hasn't been changed it should tell you on the sticker one rad support5.0 or5.8 litre with all the tune up info.hope this helps

Howdy;
You can tell a 351W from a 351C/M by looking at where the thermostat housing bolts to the engine. If it bolts to the intake manifold, it is a W. If it bolts to the block, it is a C or M. The C/M doesn't have any water jackets in the intake, but the W does.
The easiest way to tell a 302 from a 351W is to check the width of the intake manifold. An outstretched hand across the intake should be able to touch both cylinder heads on a 302, but there will be a space of about an inch and a half on the 351W.
Chances are you've got a 351W. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that Ford did make some High Output 351W's for those trucks. I actually saw one once in a junkyard that had 351 H.O. on the air cleaner lid.

Yes, Ford made a 2v 351w and a 4v 351w in these trucks the 4v was labled H.O. at least for some years. The early years they only built the 351 4v with the C6 auto. I have an 85 4v H.O. engine I am rebuilding to replace the engine in my 86, and the 4v carb and intake are now on my 84 2v truck.
Unless someone changed the engine, you have a 351w.
You do not have a 302 as they were only available fuel injected starting mid year 85' ALL 86 models are EFI
The 351m was no longer offered in 1986, so that leaves just the 351w, at least in stock form.
If you are looking for any origional 1986 specs, I have the full set of manuals and origional sales brochures. I would be happy to pass along anything that you would like to know.
