Would you buy a 2000 limited v10 with 100k miles for $13000, or a 2000 powerstroke with 216k miles for $14500? I can't decide. It's going to be the main family car. The high miles of the diesel makes me nervous, but it will get better fuel economy. What would you do?
Hmmmm...spend $1500 more, get a truck with 116,000 miles MORE on it. No matter the engine that math don't work out to me. You are 116,000 times CLOSER to a mechanical breakdown. And it may not be the engine either. There are many other things to consider. Both engines are very solid and will offer years of service if properly maintained. I've seen V10's in rough service with over 300K on the clock and no major breakdown. The tranny is the weakest link and more so in the PSD truck since it has more input torque.
If you are worried about the 3-4MPG difference then maybe a minivan should be in your future. Kidding...
Your prices may vary but based on today's national averages.
That means IF you average 12mpg in your V10 it costs .248 per mile.
Average 16 in the PSD and it will cost you .179 per mile
A difference of .069 per mile. Let's say 7 cents.
$1500 divided by .07 means you'll have to drive 21,428 to make up the offset. Not bad, really.
Keep in mind you'll then have 237,428 miles on that truck. That's quite a bit for a family car. If you were using it to drive 100+ miles a day on the highway then it wouldn't really matter too much. City and family duty driving can be a bit more wear and tear on the truck.
Drive both and see which one you like better. Also take each to a mechanic or inspection service and see which one is in better shape.
Good luck and let us know what you decide. Welcome to the forum!
I recently bought a 2005 v-10 with 14,000...that is FOURTEEN THOUSAND miles. Because it is a "CERTIFIED" used car ANYTHING that goes wrong with it for the next 7 years...ANYTHING - isnt my problem. While "hunting" for a used Excursion, I found BUNCHES of them with less than 20,000 mi on them.
Think about this - I probably paid 6-8000 more to get a low mileage "cream-puff". Assuming I drive this thing another 100,000 mi over the next 7 years, who comes out ahead in maintainence and re-sale when I want something else ?
I would wait / shop. My daughter just missed a pristine Ex. 7.3 03 model at $15400 with 121,000 miles. She thought it was too many miles until she spoke to me and found our Ex has 133,000 miles and going strong.
I think you will find a better deal shop around and go diesel.
75 mph 17.7 mpg
65 mpg 21.5 mpg
Towing 6000#+ 14.4 mpg
Try that with a gas burner. My Ford gas burner got 7 while towing.
Offer $11,850 for the X which is what it is really worth cash money and if they take it, you want be sorry. Expect 13.1mpg avg with V10 city/highway mixed driving. I have 2000 X V10 127k. Look at the tires good and cut price accordingly. It needs load range E and expect to pay from $150 to 200 each for them including mounting and balancing. 2000 X comes with 265x75x16 so lots of choices still. Andy
Those prices are way too high, IMHO. Broaden your search - don't be afraid to travel a couple of hundered miles to get a better deal.
I paid $10k for my 01 last fall with 114k on the clock, but I had to go ~100 mile to get it. Considering everything i found close to me was 3-5K more in money and mileage, well, you get the idea. As a matter of fact, the last 3 trucks I've bought, I've gone out of state to get... I just find better deals by looking a little further away.
Hey Spine, Where you at man, it makes a difference? If your on the big island like Monsta sure your gonna pay or Alaska, it's gonna cost you double plus 20%. Otherwise you gotta search truck trader and ebay and all the big newspapers. Look up Bill Heard used cars. One of the biggest in the south. Bad credit holding you back then, I'd go for lower mileage. Andy
Thanks for all of the responses. I'm way over here in Washington state. These diesel excursions are really hard to find around here. These two I mentioned are actually a state away. I can't find anything within 500 miles that's less than $18k. I'm kind of leaning toward the PSD, but the miles do make me a little nervous.
I had the same issue up here in Alberta; Canada. Deisel is worth its weight in gold as was pretty much any 4X4 Ex. I ended up going to Winnipeg; Manitoba and paying $16000 Cdn for a XLT Ex with 80000 km on its V-10. I had to give up my 7.3 with leather wants in order to get a good Ex for my needs. I absolutely love my Ex even at 10 MPG but I still say if you don't need the people room buy a pickup. Just my opinion.
