heheh.....seeing is believing.....bring the marshmellow, I'll bring the chocolate and graham crackers....we can make some smores with the header wrap fire...
Thanks for your indulgence on this old post- but maybe there's some new info re these spray coatings for wraps to help protect them. Anyone have actual experience with this??
Sounds good in theory- does it last? Saw Thermo-Tec High Heat Coating in black or aluminum. Any others??
... also, was just musing re keeping exhaust gases hotter will improve scavenging & outflow... was that just a bad rumor I heard in physics/thermodynamics classes about extracting heat from gases reduces their volumes?? - just musing...
Thanks for any info re wrap spray coatings... John H.
Hummm, What about wrapping the ceramic coated headers??? seems it would add that much more. As far as trapping moisture, the heat from the exhaust is more than adequate to evaporate any trapped moisture that might exist. If they were ceramic coated, then they would be pretty much impervious to rust, so no need to worry about trapping moisture?
As far as header wraps that are able to withstand 1200 degrees burning up in a fire... that would probably be due to some sort of a catalyst material melting onto the wrap enabling it to then catch fire also. I would have to guess pretty much everything else in sight is ashes too with a fire of that magnitude, so the header wrap burning in that situation would have to be pretty insignificant.
Just some thoughts.
That is exactly what came to my mind... Wrapping Ceramic Coated Headers ! Anyone try that?
How About wrapping headers which have been Sprayed with some High heat ceramic Spray paint?
I wrapped my ceramic coated headers with something like Thermo-Tech tape. I can't say what effect it has, since I've never taken temperature measurements of the same headers without wrapping. I just wanted to put as much insulation on it as possible.
I've never had good luck spraying anything onto headers. I hear it has to be done in a couple of stages involving spraying, baking, repeat. But mine have always flaked off after a short time.
Even the factory applied coatings wear off easily. I just wrapped the Summit bare steel shorty's in my van with cut aluminum strips from a disposable cooking pan.
