im looking to turn my ranger into a project so im looking for a crate motor to work on until the time where i can swap the motors, i need to know what motors will fit and so info on them
The boss 302 will fit and ford racing just brought them back out this year. They've been in hiding since 1970. Thier an awesome motor, I use to drang race one back in 78. It was a 1970 mavrick with a boss 302 create motor and ford top loader 4-speed. The motor was stock except for headers and the car was stock except for ladder bars and 4:11 gears and it ran a consistant 12.90 quarter mile at Norwalk raceway park.
blitzkriegiowa, I hope you aren't considering running the stock tranny from the ranger behind a V8, let alone a performance built one. You will need to get a transmission that was built for V8 applications. I think advanced adaptors does make adaptors to bolt a stock tranny to a V8 but I just don't see it lasting very long.
Some people run T5's, like from a mustang, or automatics. Of course the tranny crossmember will need to be modified or new one made or bought. If I do a V8 swap, I am going to look into getting a five speed from a 90's f150 because they are shorter and the shifter may come up through the floor in about the original location.
thanks guyd and i have a couple really ollllldddd trannys down in t.n. and i have the manual tranny in it now so i could just upgrade my internals on that
would never use a stock tranny on that motor, dont have the motor. was just thinking what would be a good motor to base a pre runner out of. was thinking the mustang 5.0 but i saw the boss engine on the ford proformace site and thought that would be a nice one to use.
Look around for a C6. Rangerpilot seems to have the tech knowlege on how to rig it up with the computer, or if you need a stand alone computer for it with the Boss 302. Wendell's right, the new Boss 302 is CRAZY. The reviews are great. It's lightweight and boogywoogy. Worth the money really and its a drop in. Again, make sure you get good advice on the PCM issues
you probably also know that unless the ranger you are going to use has an 8.8 rear, I believe all 4.0 equipped rangers came with, you will need to upgrade to an 8.8 or 9 inch. Hopefully this weekend I will be putting a 93 explorer rear end into my 92 ranger. Mine is a 4.0 with 8.8 rear. My main reason for it is to get a lower gear ratio, 3.73 compared to my stock 3.27. I will need to weld on the new spring and shock mounts to match the stock ranger axel though. Also the explorer has 31 spline axels compared to 28 spline on the rangers.
