Newbie needs help!
I would first like to say that I have been “lurking” on this site for quite some time and the good information as well as the helpful people here add to one incredible Website! I am the proud owner of 2 v10’s and I love them both. I have owned 4 PSD in the past and they where nothing but headaches.
One is in my “play truck” 01 F350 X-Cab Dually 4x4 and the second is in my 03 F450 Wrecker. I have run the wrecker HARD from day one and it has never let me down until a few weeks ago. Not bad for a 165,000 city miles.
I have been searching and reading the forums looking to find and answer to my problem since I have had the truck a 3 different Ford dealers, spent big $$$$ for diagnostic time, and each one tells me they can’t find the problem. Each dealer has told me there are NO trouble codes. I have never had the check engine light come on either.
Here is my problem 2 problems:
The truck has a rough idle which started out of the blue. I know I know shame on me, the plugs have never been changed. I was afraid they would not come out since I waited so long. The other big problem I have is while driving down the road the truck will hesitate badly when at a constant throttle, (almost as if I shut the key off) the Tach goes dead for a split second, the motor spits and coughs and then keeps on running. The motor quit on me once but after sitting for 10 minutes, it restarted and now I am here begging for help.
Any help would be much appreciated so I can get back working again without the worry if I am going to need to be towed in.
Mike
Hesitation can be caused by a fuel issue like a clogged filter but with the other symptoms that you mentioned it sounds more electrical (spark) related. Could be a bad boot or Coil On Plug (COP). I had hesitation like you mention on my 00 V10 and it turned out to be a cracked COP.
The tach going dead for that split second could also me signaling a bad (engine) ground. Not a bad idea to check those connections.
Thanks for the reply. I went to the Ford Dealer today and bought new plugs and and new boots. The fuel filter was just done in the last 5000 miles but I will try another one. The bad ground brings up a good point. I just had a Jasper Monster Box tranny installed a week or so before all this started. Wonder if they left off a ground wire?
Is there anyway that you know of to test the ignition coils? I was hoping the dealer would pick up a trouble code for a bad coil so at least I knew witch ones to change.
Thanks a million for your help
Mike
