Transmision differences?
I am looking at having to either rebuild or replace the trans in my 93, the truck is a 2wd sc/sb with the 300/e4od combo. Now for the question, I have been told that these transmisions are all the same, that any differences are in the computer. I always thought that 1/2, 3/4, 1ton, and Lightnings had different set-ups (heavier duty clutches, higher line pressures, etc.) Could someone please help me shed some light on this?

They're all the same from 89-91, 92-94, and 95-97. The best were from 95 and up. By this point, Ford had most of the bugs worked out of the tranny and if maintained well, would last a long while. My suggestion is to get one out of a 95 or newer.
If you're going to get a junkyard tranny, make sure you pull the converter and replace the front pump seal. There should be a tag on the back left of the tranny with information on it. F5TE will indicate that its a 95. F6 is 96 and F7 is 97. I'm sure you got the point by now.

Absolutely not. The diesel tranny's have completely different gear ratios. Not only that, but it won't even bolt up to a gas engine. The E4OD had 3 versions. One of which bolted up to the 300, 302, and the 351. The other is one that bolts up to the 460. The other is one that bolts up to the 7.3 PSD.

Absolutely. As a matter of fact, I don't ever recall seeing a 300 of this vintage without one, unless it was a manual. The 302 usually got the AOD. I think the reason why a lot of 300's got the E4OD was because of it's low end grunt. The E4OD could handle it much better than the AOD in the long run.

In an F-350, it's either going to be an E4OD or a C6. Easiest way to tell is the C6 doesn't have overdrive. And the door code will tell you, it's either going to be a K or an E.
Handyman - the E4OD that goes behind a diesel has the same ratios as the one that goes behind a gas motor. You're thinking of the ZF.
